HONOR, RESPECT, AND DEFEND AT ALL COST
I have noticed many Americans do not understand what the American flag represents. It is very disappointing to see the way that some people treat the American flag today. It shows when the National Anthem is played. Some do not remove their hats or place their hand over their heart or even face the flag. Although some do face the flag with their hat removed and their hand over their heart, it is just to avoid looking out of place. They will often continue to carry on a conversation and treat the National Anthem as a formality rather than a privilege.
¨ I am very proud to say that I am one that truly respects the flag and what it stands for. In my opinion, the flag is not just a piece of cloth waving in the wind. It is a symbol of freedom that demands our respect. Through the smoke, fire, and devastation, it has remained as a reminder of the triumph, compromise, and ultimate sacrifice of the soldiers who fought to make and keep our country free. When I stand facing the flag with my hand over my heart and hat removed, I can feel the pride and sense the presence of others. I do not know who or what causes that feeling, but it is there.
I can not tell you what to do or what to feel. I can only let you know how I feel. I hope that what I have written has opened your hearts and minds to what the flag represents. I would like to ask that the next time you find yourself joining in the National Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance, you remember what the flag stands for. Feel the pride of being an American. Remember the men and women that gave a part of their life, and those that paid the ultimate price. Because of them, you can stand in freedom, pay your respect and also show your pride. “ Those who do not battle for their country do not know with what ease they accept their citizenship in America.” -Dean Brelis, The face of South Vietnam

Somewhere a bugle softly sounds
The message of renown,
And some inside their buildings wait
Until the flag comes down.
And others run to get in their cars
Quite harrowed and dismayed,
Afraid they will not reach the gate
Before retreat is played.
Not thinking of the flag or those
Who fought to keep it flying.
How many would be glad to stand,
Whose bodies now are mute,
Or have no hand that they might raise
And stand in proud salute.
So accept it not as duty
But a privilege ever more
